A few days ago we received fabulous news! AURA (Anglican United Refugee Alliance) contacted us to say we have been matched with a family and the many, many months of hard work by dozens, if not hundreds, of volunteers have made it happen. We can expect a Syrian family to join our community with the next 4 months
Currently in Ankara, Turkey, the family is from Syria. The father is 40 years old and speaks “some” English. He has worked as a farmer, a salesman, and in a car shop. The 35 year old mother has been the homemaker to their four children; three boys aged 17, 15 and 9; and one girl aged 7. While the boys have had some schooling, the girl has yet to be to school. The family also includes the father’s 65 year old mother.
This case is “BOVR” — Blended Visa Office-Referred Program. Under this program refugees are referred directly to Canadian Visa offices abroad by the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR). Many of these families, such as the one St. Thomas’ group has been matched with, are travel-ready and can expect to arrive in Canada within 1-4 months.
Please watch this website and our Facebook Page for updates as they become available.
Congratulations and thank you to the many, many people who came together to make this happen!
